23 Hours of Bliss

I spent my first night away from Bo on Saturday night. And while Mike and I both missed him terribly, I have to admit that our night away was just what I needed.

Around 12:30 on Saturday we headed to the IMAX to see Batman. I ate popcorn and drank fully leaded Mountain Dew while enjoying a movie we've been dying to see for a month and a half. Bliss.

After the movie, we went shopping. We didn't have a lot of time so we just went to a few places. Mike and I found a few items at Banana Republic and we bought Bo this adorable shirt at Children's Place and some pajamas. I also hit the kiddie consignment shop and picked up some great finds -- jeans with the tags still attached, toys, etc. Bliss.

After our brief shopping trip we checked in at the Herrington. We were suppose to go there for our anniversary but then Bo was sick and it only took us 6 months to reschedule... Anyway, we finally made it. The hotel is beautiful. We had a gorgeous room with a view of the river. Bliss.

This is the view from our room. Isn't the river beautiful?

At 5:30 we went to the spa for a couple's massage. This was Mike's first massage. About halfway through he said, "Jamie, I see why you like this." :) Needless to say, we both emerged relaxed and renewed. Bliss.

We went back to our room and took showers and then headed to FoxFire for dinner. I had the most amazing stuffed peppers and Mike had fillet. To die for. Bliss.

This is the only picture of me and the only picture of the two of us together. I didn't carry the camera around but I did snap this quick shot before we headed out the door to dinner. Talk about an extreme close-up!

We debated going to Graham's 318 for fondue. But I was just stuffed... there was no way I could handle it. (Hum... maybe I can convince him to take us today??? Bo would like it!) We walked back to the hotel and soaked in a melon scented bath. Ahhh... Bliss.

The rest of the evening has been edited to avoid embarrassing close family and friends who read the blog.... *wink* Bliss.

We enjoyed a peaceful nights sleep but we still woke up at 6:30. While for us this is sleeping in, it isn't the type of sleeping in you think about when you have the first morning in as long as you can remember that you don't have to get up. We laid in bed for a good while and just enjoyed the fact that we didn't have to do anything. Bliss.

We ate breakfast at the hotel and read the Tribune on the deck in our hotel room. Bliss. (And what is the deal with McCain picking Palin? Seriously, I didn't think he had a chance before -- but this is like sticking a nail in his own coffin!)

Mike opens up the Trib. I think he knows I've grabbed the camera.... :)

About 9:30 I went for a facial. I don't think I look any younger but it sure did feel good. Bliss.

At 10:30 we were ready to head back to the in-laws to see the Bobo. We missed him. We could have stayed at the hotel until 12 but we wanted to see our baby. And it was past time for me to check-in with my online class... I can't be away from it for more than 24 hours. I just made the cut-off today...

We were thrilled to be reunited with Bo but he had a great time with his Grandma and Grandpa. They said he slept well, ate like a champ, and was a little angel. Thank goodness!

And now, it's back to reality -- back to the online class while Bo naps this afternoon. Back to mommyhood. Back to my brick and mortar job on Monday. Back to all of the normal routines and worries.

But for 23 hours, it all melted away. Ah... bliss.

Just Another Day In Paradise.

I really enjoyed the last time I wrote a post like this, so I decided to try it again. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to be nearly as creative as I was originally... I guess you could say my life has changed a little!

This was my day, Tuesday.

6:00 - Mike wakes me up with a kiss as he heads out the door to start his commute to work. I tell him I love him and to be careful. The same thing I say every morning -- even if I am half asleep!

6:03 - I put my contacts in and stagger my way to the shower.

6:18 - Out of the shower. I lotion up and throw on my robe. I head downstairs where I pour myself a bowl of Blueberry Shredded Wheat and a 16 oz. glass of water. I make myself comfortable in my chair and check my email while I eat.

6:27 - Put bowl in sink. Start actual work on online class. Ugh. The details are boring... I'll spare you.

7:15 - Take a break to blow dry my nearly dry hair.

7:45 - Bo starts stirring in his crib.

7:53 - Head up to Bo's room. Pick him up and give him a big hug. Change his diaper and give him some "moose munch" (breastfeed).

8:14 - Dress Bo, bring him downstairs for some yogurt with fruit and cereal. Feed him.

8:23 - Give Bo some Cheerios and an aluminum pan to play with in his high chair while I unload the dishwasher.

8:32 - Take Bo back upstairs while I brush my teeth and get dressed.

8:47 - Put Bo on the floor in his room to play while I put away his laundry that I did last night.

8:56 - Read Bo If You Give a Moose a Muffin

9:12 - Back downstairs. Play with Bo on the main floor for a little while.

9:15 - Have the bright idea that walking to work would be a great way to fit some exercise into my day. Pack Bo up in the stroller, lace up tennis shoes, grab the school bag, Bo's lunch bag, and my purse.

9:30 - Start walking to Grammie's house. Check BlackBerry and talk to Bo on the way.

9:45 - Arrive at Grammie's. Put Bo's lunch in the fridge and wait for Grammie to change over her laundry.

9:53 - Start walking to school.

10:08 - Arrive at school. Realize I can't get in the back gate since I don't have my opener. Walk to the front of the school.

10:11 - Stop by the office to pick up my mail. Head to the bathroom to change my shoes.

10:15 - Arrive in my office. Get organized and start to grade papers, prepare lessons, etc. I won't bore you with all of this too much...

11:15 - Lunch bell rings. Mandy and I head down to the cafeteria. It's hoagie day. I choose a chicken patty instead.

11:22 - Eat lunch with the lunch crew in the journalism room.

12:00 - Lunch is over. Yearbook girls are invading.

12:06 - Break news to the girls that the principal won't be on our cover.

12:17 - Take the older girls next door and brainstorm a new theme for the book. New idea is "Go Green. Bleed Orange." Laugh hysterically about turtles. Get asked for the second time in two weeks if I'm on meds. (I'm not)

12:45 - Watch girls practice their spiel for ad sales. Ugh. They are loud.

1:20 - Go next door to check email, get stuff together, and avoid loudness.

1:30 - Head to next class - US History. Put out worksheets, make sure I have what I need.

1:36 - Take attendance, collect maps, give map quiz.

1:50 - Take students to the computer lab to work on American Revolution project. Ugh. They are loud.

2:34 - Kids are antsy. I'm bored. I remember why I hate group projects.

3:00 - Finally, the bell.

3:05 - Back in my office changing shoes. Ben stops by for a cookie. Several kids come by to pick up yearbooks.

3:10 - Head into Mandy's room to say bye.

3:12 - Chat with Mrs. Frazier as I start my walk to Mom's.

3:24 - After nearly being ran over multiple times by insane teenage drivers, arrive at my mom's house. Bo is already up from his nap and bouncing on her knee. She says he didn't sleep long.

3:30 - Hear about Bo's day.

3:40 - Load up the stroller and start to walk home.

3:56 - Arrive home. Grab a Propel and take Bo upstairs with me while I change clothes.

4:03 - Come back downstairs. Give Bo a drink of my Propel. It drips on the floor. Great, another cleaning job for me!

4:06 - Let Bo play while I quickly check my email.

4:12 - Play on the floor with Bo.

4:45 - Take Bo upstairs for moose munch.

5:00 - Back downstairs to feed Bo and fix supper.

5:05 - My mom arrives. She takes over feeding Bo while I work on supper and cutting up food for Bo to eat both tonight and in his lunch tomorrow (pear, cherries, plum, green beans, and tomato). Luckily, it's just leftover spaghetti, breadsticks, salad, and cookies tonight so supper isn't very difficult.

5:20 - Mom goes out to smoke a cigarette. Grr...

5:34 - Bo is on the floor playing with Mom. Dinner is about ready. Try to call Mikey to see if he would rather have a leftover hamburger and to tell him I already got the mail but it goes to voicemail.

5:44 - Mike walks in. He gives Bo a hug and puts him back in his high chair.
5:55 - We all sit down to supper. Bo eats pieces of breadstick and yougurt melts (yuck!) that he loves.

6:15 - Supper is over. We get the dishwasher loaded and clean up both Bo and the kitchen.

6:23 - My mom leaves.

6:30 - Mike makes a few phone calls, goes through the mail.

6:37 - Mike takes Bo up to put his jammies on. I start working on my online class.

6:57 - Phone call about some things I am wanting to sell.

7:04 - I head out to take things I am wanting to sell to the person I hope will sell them.

7:17 - Back home. Time to put Bo to bed. Mike and I both go up and put Bo down.

7:20 - Bo is down. I open my box from J.Crew. Decide I don't like 90% of it and package it to send back.

7:30 - Back to work on my online class. Mike works out.

8:12 - Mike comes through to say he is going to take a shower.

8:30 - Still working on online class.

9:00 - Mike comes upstairs to ask about a question on a test I've convinced him to grade for me. He convinces me that we should both stop working soon.

9:12 - Mike and I watch a DVRed Jon and Kate Plus 8 in the basement.

10:00 - I head to the main floor to check my email and pump. Mike gets the cats in.

10:14 - Freeze two bags of milk. Head upstairs.

10:16 - We check on Bo. Smile at how cute he is. Make sure he is breathing. Turn out his light.

10:18 - We both head to our bathrooms to get ready for bed. I wash my face and brush my teeth.

10:21 - We are both in bed. We ponder reading but we are both exhausted. Lights out.

Just a typical day that will blend together into many days of the same basic routine.

And the best thing is, I get to do it all again tomorrow...

Wordless Wednesday: Apple

How about only a few words? :)
We picked this apple off of our "apple bush" (aka the apple tree that fell over in a storm this spring but continued to grow apples so we didn't cut it down) when we were outside on Sunday afternoon. I took a bite, Mike took a bite, and then he let Bobo have a taste. Uh oh! Guess who took over our apple!! This was Bo's first experience with a whole apple -- the teeth marks in the second picture -- those are his. Apparently, even with only 4 teeth, you can eat an apple! He looks so silly in the last picture -- but I just love the appley drool on his chin!

Possibility Curve

A few weeks ago I was sitting in a teacher's meeting and my principal clicked the mouse and a slide popped up on the projector with a drawing similar to the one above. It's one of the few things I remember from the 2 solid days of meetings we endured before school began.

The point of this possibility curve is that usually things get worse before they get better. The Principal's example was dealing with remodeling our middle school. The school is fine, but life is going to be quite difficult when they move all of the teachers and students in December to redo the school (the dip in the curve). Long term, the sacrifice will be worth it because there will be a much better school. Make sense? Clear as mud? I thought so.

In my malaise during these meetings I drew this curve on a yellow post-it and stuck it in my planner. I've been looking at it often. The more I think about it the more I realize this strange possibility curve actually applies to many aspects of my life.

Infertility was definitely curved in this way. I was living my life and everything was fine and then suddenly, everything changed, and I started down the dip in the curve. The curve bottomed out with IVF cycle #5 and then I started the uphill climb of pregnancy before reaching the next level - parenthood. Yes, it sucked. Yes, infertility made my life become much worse, but ultimately, my life is better for it. Even the bottom of the curve was worth it and I'd do it all over again.

I also feel like I am trekking across this curve currently. If you've read here awhile, you know that a move is in our future. When?? We have no idea. Mike has applied for several transfers and now we are in limbo land as we sit and wait for the proverbial bomb to drop and our lives to change at lightening speed (that's when the curve will bottom out).

But I can feel the slip down the curve taking place. Everything is qualified by what the next day may bring. "We'll have Bo's birthday party in the basement -- if we are still here." That has become our mentality.

Life will definitely become more stressful and more difficult before it is better. I'll have to quit my job. We'll have to find a new house. We'll have to move. All of it will be difficult. Especially considering many of the people I am closest too aren't being very supportive... But ultimately, I know that our lives will be better in the long run. Mike and I will have better jobs. We'll live in an area where there is more to do -- more opportunities for Bo. We'll eventually end up being closer to more family, etc.

Sometimes it takes putting it all on the line. Being willing to risk temporary unhappiness for long term gain...

For those willing to take that risk, whether the risk is IVF, moving, or another long-term goal, the possibilities are truly endless.

Bo's Photo Book (Coupon Code Included!)

The pictures of this book do not even begin to do it justice. Seriously, this is one of the neatest things I have ever made. I now understand how you can become addicted to scrapbooking -- I love looking through this book.
A little over a month ago I had a coupon from Shutterfly that I needed to use. I decided I wanted to publish some of the scrapbook pages that I made in the online scrapbooking class I took this summer so I threw them together and ordered the book. *Special thanks to my friend, Jenny, who helped with several aspects of the book!*
When it arrived, I was amazed. It's beautiful! Sure, there is some tweaking I need to do -- larger fonts in a few places, a few places my text is too close to the gutter, but overall, I was VERY impressed. Our yearbook last year cost $28,000 to produce (my girls raised all of that money too!) and this book from Shutterfly has the same quality as a yearbook.

Bo's First Swim Layout.

Splish Splash layout.

Sticky Feet Layout.

The best part is, it's reasonable. Even without a coupon, a 20 page book is $35. Super reasonable for the quality of the book! I want to make a book that details Bo's first year and I want to make books for a few family members for Christmas. I am just so impressed...

I'm also eyeing several photo books as gift options for Bo's birthday or Christmas -Sesame Street Birthday, Peek-A-Boo Bedtime Picture Book, and Alphabet Adventure. What little one wouldn't want one of these???

And because I love you and I want to share the love of these wonderful books you can Click Here to receive 15% off your order of $25 or more!! *Coupon is good for any Shutterfly purchase -- you don't have to purchase a photo book -- even though I highly recommend that you do!*

Happy 9 Month Birthday, Baby Bo!

Dear Bubber Bo,

You have changed so much in the last 3 months. On your 6 month birthday you weren't even sitting up completely on your own (it was a few days later) and now, just 3 months later you are very close to walking! You can walk around the footstool and love pulling up and getting into all sorts of trouble. This weekend you had a grand time playing in the cat's water bowl on our porch.

At your doctor's appointment yesterday you weighed 20 lb. 8 oz. and and were 27 inches long. I can't believe how big you are!

For your nine month birthday, Mommy and Daddy bought you a neat LeapFrog Table. Of course, we couldn't wait to give it to you, and you just love it.

You have lots of favorite toys -- Tony the tiger is still a winner but you've also latched on to the inchworm that we bought you when we went to Galena. You love your little links and they have managed to find homes in every room of our house! You can pull up and really play with your kitchen now too. Grammie has lots of toys at her house and you really enjoy playing 'knock over the blocks' with the blocks from your wagon there.

And of course, you love books. Whose Nose and Toes? is your hands down favorite but you also really like the ABC Book, Little Feet Like, That's Not My Car, and Harry the Dirty Dog. I hope you will be a voracious reader.

You're still wearing size 3 diapers and you're in 12 month clothes. Some of the 12 month clothes are a bit snug. Mommy ordered you your first pair of shoes in a size 5, wowza, Mr. Big Feet!!

You eat incredibly well. Everything we have given you, you seem to enjoy. We are doing more and more table food but I am still trying to keep you on a mostly fruit and vegetable plan. I know it's better for you. For over a month now you've flat out refused your puree unless it is mixed with cereal. You want real chunks of food -- none of this puree stuff! You will still eat applesauce and mashed sweet potato without any issue though. Go figure! Mango, starfruit, honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon, avocado, banana, sweet potato, peas, black beans, green beans, pears, plums, peaches, carrots, and chicken chunks -- I think that is all we have in the fridge for you right now. Poor kid, we must be afraid you're going to go hungry.

We are still breastfeeding. I can't believe we've made it this far. My goal is to never give you formula and I feel pretty confident we will make it. You are only drinking milk 3 times a day now. (You dropped your before bed feeding about 3 weeks ago -- for several nights in a row you just didn't want to eat before bed. In many ways it is good -- now we can brush your four teeth right after supper.) I feed you when you wake up in the morning and before supper and Grammie gives you a bottle at lunchtime. I pump every night before bed to make sure you'll have plenty for the next day.

Your sleep habits are wonderful. You've been sleeping through the night since 5 months and now we have the routines so down pat that you go down without a hitch for naps and bed. You're napping twice a day -- at 10 and 2. You go to bed for the night at about 7:30 and you're up between 7:30 and 8 in the morning. Daddy and I check on you each night before we go to bed and you're so adorable sleeping in your crib. We can't help but look at each other and marvel how we became so lucky...

You took your first bath in the big bathtub on Sunday and loved it. You're definitely a big fan of the water. We don't even cover your eyes when we rinse your hair and you never complain! I think you would play in the water all day if we would let you. I'm thinking with the right training we might be lucky enough to have a little Michael Phelps on our hands... (A mom can dream, right?)

You have a wonderful disposition and everyone you meet finds you a pleasure to be around. We take you everywhere and you love to be on the go. You do so well when we go shopping, out for walks, or to restaurants. You never fuss and love riding in the car too. You even do well on longer car trips to Grandpa and Grandma's house. Mommy and Daddy are so proud of you!

You are cuter each day and so loved. I can't imagine another little boy in this world who is as loved as you... And yes, you're pretty spoiled too. ;) Your personality is emerging and your happiness is contagious. Even when Mommy and Daddy have had a rough day all we have to do is play with you and listen to your laugh. Your laugh truly is infectious. Your whole face lights up when you smile and with that sparkle in your eyes and the pleasant melody of your laughter one must question if there is anything more beautiful.

I can't imagine what my life would be like without you... And I can't remember what it was like to not know you... Thank you for being our little man.

Love you. Always.
Mama

Tuesdays with Jamie??? French Silk Pie

If you're stopping by to see Granola Grabbers, well... I hate to disappoint, but I didn't make them this week. :( Mike doesn't eat a lot of the ingredients in the grabbers and I've just had too much on my plate this week to get it done. Please stop over to Tuesdays with Dorie and see the recipes. I'd eat them if someone would make some for me. :)

Instead, I present you with a recipe for French Silk Pie. My 7th grade science teacher and now financial planner (funny how that worked out...) brought this pie to my parent's house when they moved a little over two years ago. Mike inhaled half of the pie in one sitting so I had to ask for the recipe. It's definitely become a family favorite.

And I will warn you now -- if you are on any type of a diet, just click away right now. You don't want to see this.... :)

First, you bake a pie crust. If you have all kinds of time on your hands I highly recommend Dorie's pie crust. If you're crunched for time and just trying to make something yummy for your family, you can take the easy way out (like I did this week) and use a Pillsbury ready to bake crust. I know, I know... What kind of a baker am I?

Once your crust is prepared you can start on the filling. The filling is the star of the show.
Throw 2 sticks of butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar into a stand mixer. (Have I mentioned how much I love my Kitchen-Aide. Definitely a wonderful wedding gift!) Let it beat until it is creamy and not grainy. You'll probably have to scrape the butter off the beaters a few times. Once that is done add 2 ounces of unsweetened chocolate, melted, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Your filling should then look like the picture above.
The magic of this recipe is eggs. Four of them! Add two of the eggs and blend for 5 minutes. At the end of the 5 minutes your filling should look like this.
Mike grabbed the camera and took this picture of me washing my hands. Make sure you wash your hands. It makes the pie taste better. And it's a good thing to do to kill time while you wait for those eggs to beat.
Add the other 2 eggs and beat for an additional 5 minutes. When you're done you should have a rich, creamy, chocolate silk filling. Pour the filling into the pie crust and refrigerate for several hours or overnight. Before serving top with whipped cream (or, if you're in a hurry -- Cool Whip) and grated chocolate.
Eat. Enjoy.

As always, this recipe comes with Bo's seal of approval. :)

French Silk Pie

1 cup butter
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
2 tsp vanilla
4 eggs
Bake a pie crust or use a Pillsbury refrigerated crust and make according to package directions.
Whipped cream or Cool Whip

Beat sugar and butter until sugar is not grainy. Add chocolate and vanilla. Add eggs, two at a time, beating 5 minutes after each addition. Pour into cooled pie crust. Chill 2 hours or until firm. Before serving, top with whipped cream and a little grated chocolate.

Goals

I started using my new Busy Body Book three weeks ago and I absolutely adore it. Talk about the planner of my dreams. :) (Seriously, if you don't have one of these, you need it. Literally -- NEED. They even make a normal January-December one for those of you who don't live on a school calendar...)

One of the best aspects of the book is that there is plenty of room to write all of the random things I want to write down every week. Sure, I want to write down doctor's appointments, days off work -- the normal stuff. But I also want to write down more than that. My Busy Body Book has room for my food journal, tracking our spending, logging the number of hours Bo spends with my mom, the number of hours I'm devoting to my online class -- you get the idea.

Even better, there is a full page for each week to write to-do lists. I love a good to-do list but I've managed to take the page a bit further. Each week, I've been giving myself a set of goals. Just a short list of goals/reminders to myself to help me get through the week. Since I look in the planner about a million times a day I think the goals subliminally make it to my mind. :)

This week's goals included:
1. Cook 3 nights I am trying to cook only 3 times a week and have leftovers 3 nights and eat out 1 night (instead of cooking every night and it being one more addition to my to-do list each day). So far I've cooked two nights, had leftovers 1 night, and my mom cooked 1 night. Not bad!
2. Exercise 3 times I went for a walk with Mike and Bo on Sunday and Bo and I walked to my mom's house for supper last night. Only one more workout needed to meet this goal!
3. Track spending I started reading some blogs about how to save more money. One aspect that I know I can do is to track all of our spending. I've been listing out everything we spend -- from my school lunches to gasoline -- it all gets written down. I have caught myself clicking off of the J.Crew website several times without buying anything since starting this...
4. Keep up with school/online classes Hmm... maybe keep up isn't the best term. As I'm writing this I still have 13 papers to grade and several discussion questions to grade for my online class. But it doesn't HAVE to be done until Sunday.... I'm ready to teach tomorrow for 'real' school but not fully ready for next week. I'm hoping to spend some extra time on both jobs tomorrow since Mike has the day off work.
5. Spend at least 1 hour each day only playing with Bo By far my best goal of the week. I've devoted at least 1 hour each day just to playing with Bo. Not to feeding him. Not to diapering or bathing him. Not to watching him while I unload the dishwasher or fold laundry. One hour where all I do is focus on playing with him. Definitely the best hour of my day. Today we played in the grass, swang, and read several books. When our hour was up we came in and did all of those other fun things I mention above. :)
6. Don't feel guilty about going back to school This is a big one but overall I am doing better than I expected. It's hard being away from Bo for several hours each day but I know that it is good for both of us for me to work a few hours a day (probably two jobs is a bad idea... I'm paying for that one) and I know he is in good hands.
7. Breathe! Definitely one of those weeks where I've had way too much on my plate. I've made it through the long days this week and Mike is home now for the weekend. There may be a light at the end of the tunnel...
